New method to grow blood vessels of Heart |
||
| American
scientists have used controlled doses of a human protein
to get hearts to grow their own arteries. Normally the
bypass surgery involves stopping the heart, for which
some patients may be too ill. A team of Harvard
scientists have found a solution to this. Michael Simons and colleagues report in the
latest issue of the journal Ciculation that they
implanted tiny timed-release capsules in to the heart
muscles of patients waiting for bypass surgery. The
capsules contained a hormone called basic
fibroblast growth factor (bfGF). The hormone was delivered to the
patient's heart over a four to six week period. The patients getting 100 millinonths of a gram showed clear and significant improvement in blood flow, and they suffered no angina or chest pain. Those who got the lower dose got no worse. Those who were given only the placebo actually showed a worsening in blood flow during stress tests and they suffered chest pain. This study involved only 24 patients. After treatment blood flow was measured by two sophisticated tests, involving magnetic and nuclear stress testing. A bigger trail has begun involving 120 patients. Could this be a beginning of a new method of treating Ischemic Heart Disease !! |
