Weight reduction is an authentic treatment for obese women with infertility. This finding was presented by Dr. Rob Norman, Professor of Obstertics and Gynaecology, Department of Reproductive Medicine, University of Adelaide, Australia. A large number of obese patients do not conceive inspite of assisted reproductive measures. Many of them became pregnant after undergoing weight reduction programme.
Obesity is a common problem in developed countries and it is rapidly increasing in developing countries.
Obesity is associated with significant diseases like - diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea etc.etc. When it comes to reproduction it has even greater impact, complicating pregnancy with gestational diabetes, increasing the miscarriage rate, and disrupting menstrual cycle.

There is sufficient evidence that the women who are over weight are more likely to have menstrual dysfuction.
Many obese women are able to get pregnant while others women only marginally over weight are unable to conceive. The key lies in the body shape. There are two types of obesity. Apple shape - whom excess weight is distributed centrally - have higher risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Pear shape - whom excess fat is of peripheral distrbution i.e. hips. Various studies have shown that women with pear shape obesity become pregnant more quickly than women with central obesity.
