Gerhard Domagk was a German pathologist who received Nobel Prize for his discovery of antibacterial effects of Prontosil. He is the person who discovered Sulfa drugs - sulphanomides. Domagk discovered that a coal tar dye called Prontosil Red contained chemicals which were effective in controlling bacterial infections in mice. While he was looking for a human subject to try the drug, Domagk's four year old daughter hurt her arm with a needle. The wound became infected and the doctors said the arm had to be amputated. Domagk gave her prontosil. She was cured in a dramatic fashion. Domagk later discovered two more compounds which were effective in the treatment of tuberculosis. He could not accept the Nobel Prize in 1939 due to Hitler's strictures. When he finally received it in 1947, he had to forfeit the prize money according to Prize rules.
