Indian medical scientists have been
able to establish that a traditional ayurvedic drug is as
useful in treating diabetes as modern drugs.
Interestingly, the finding is by researchers who practice
the modern system of medicine. The dosage of the drug has
also been worked out and plans are underway for marketing
it. The extract, known as Vijayasar, has been used
traditionally for treating diabetes. The drug is
extracted from the bark of a tree, P. marsupium, found in the Mekal hills in Madhya
Pradesh, India.
The research was conducted mainly by the Indian Council of Medical Research with the help of collaborating centres in the country. Newly-diagnosed or untreated diabetes patients in the 35-60 age-group were asked to participate in the trial. In all 223 patients were admitted for therapy. However, only 93 could be followed up for the complete course. The blood sugar levels of 63 of them could be controlled. A research paper published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research says Vijayasar has had a "significant therapeutic effect in terms of lowering the blood glucose level in diabetic patients." |
