Nobel Prize for Medicine

Guenter Blobel of Rockefeller University in New York won the for Medicine for his research on proteins which shed new light on human diseases including cystic fibrosis and primary hyperoxaluria, an ilness causing development of kidney stones at an early age. Blobel (63), a native of Germany, was cited for the discovery that proteins have intrinsic signals that govern their transport and localisation in the cell. A number of hereditary diseases are caused by errors in these signals and transport mechanisms.

Dr. Blobel made this discovery in the early 1970s. During the subsequent 20 years, he researched the details of how these "postal codes," or signals, work.
Blobel's research has also contributed to the development of a more effective use of cells as 'protein factories' for the production of important drugs.
Dr. Blobel's research paved the way for further study of the cell and laid the basis for developing drugs, such as Insulin, growth hormone and a substance used in chemotherapy that stimulates bone-marrow production.
