| Estrogen May
Be Fountain of Youth Women who have high levels of the female sex hormone estrogen have more youthful appearances than women who have lower estrogen levels. Women with lower levels even appear older than their actual age. Those are the findings of researchers in Germany and Chile. To test whether estrogen may be a woman's fountain of youth, they studied 100 white females ages 35 to 55. Researchers estimated each woman's age upon first meeting her, then measured her blood estrogen levels. Study results show "women with high estrogen concentrations looked younger" than their actual age, researchers report in the July 17 issue of The Lancet. In fact, "the discrepancy between estimated and real age could be as high as eight years in either direction," researchers write. Postmenopausal women who take Estrogen replacement therapy show a thickness in the skin and decrease in wrinkles. But taking estrogen does come with risks, including an increase in uterine cancer and breast cancer. However, estrogen treatment also has been shown to reduce the risk of fractures in women and protect them from heart disease.
