  Vitamins May Fight Prostate Cancer

Laboratory studies show vitamins C and E appear to reduce
the risk of male hormones triggering the growth of prostate
cancer cells.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin tested two types
of prostate cancer cells with a synthetic male hormone, and
then exposed the cells to vitamins C and E. The tests show
cells treated with high doses of those vitamins had a 57
percent reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS)
activity. ROS are particles that cause genetic damage and
are believed to play a role in tumor growth and
aging.
"Understanding how antioxidants act to reduce cancer risk
will aid in developing prevention strategies," researchers
write in the July 21 issue of Journal of the National
Cancer Institute. Scientists say more research is needed to
clarify how antioxidants produce this anti-cancer effect.
