There are Gene tests that promise to predict a person's future health. These are being are being sold to Americans, for hundreds of dollars apiece. This test instead of solving our poblems may create new ones. Its important to know how best to use it, who should get it, when, and just what the results mean. In addition, there has to be regulation to ensure the accuracy of gene tests because mistakes can be life-altering.
An Illinois woman, for example, had her ovaries surgically removed before discovering the company that had told her she had a cancer-causing gene mutation actually had made a mistake .She was not at increased risk after all.
But gene tests are poised to revolutionize medicine, and experts say they could help thousands of people. So a panel of leading geneticists is preparing to recommend how the nation can ensure quality gene testing, and ways to guide doctors and consumers on the tests' appropriate use.
Gene tests can relieve people's worry about a disease or alert them to take steps to prevent illness. But some tests reveal risk for fatal diseases that cannot be prevented.
