A new study shows taking 500 milligrams
of vitamin C daily can reduce blood pressure by 9 percent
in people with moderate Hypertension.
Researchers found that after one month, those
participating in a study, taking 500 mg. of vitamin C
daily lowered both their systolic and diastolic blood
pressures. Taking vitamin C daily did not lower blood
pressure levels in people with normal blood pressure.
Researchers also point out that getting the 500 mg. of
vitamin C from fruits and vegetables, instead of a
vitamin pill, would provide additional benefits to people
trying to alleviate hypertension.
Vitamin C may work
against hypertension, researchers suggest, by protecting
levels of nitric oxide, a natural chemical in the body
that helps relax blood vessels.
Large doses of vitamin C can also
prevent illness by alleviating the body's normal
response to stress.
The vitamin C was also found to
raise the levels of circulating antibodies, the
body's main defense against systematic infection.
It has beneficial effect on the immune fuction.
