Vaccine that could prevent cervical cancer in two out of three cases may be available in the next 5-7 years. Cervical cancer kills thousands of women every year. Up to 99% of cervical cancer is caused by human papillomavirus- HPV, which is the most commonly sexually transmitted disease. In a study conducted in University of Washington a vaccine was given to 768 sexually active young women. This vaccine was related to HPV-16 strain that is linked to 50 % of the cervical cancers. After 18 months none of the women became infected with HPV-16. Of 765 women who received placebo 41got infected with the virus. A vaccine is under development that targets HIV-16 and -18 strains, which account for 70% of the cervical cancers. |
