Drug that
helps Obese, Smokers and Addicts
|
A new drug
- Rimonabant or Acomplia has been researched which is said to help people
lose weight and keep it off for two years. It has also been found that
this drug could fight obesity and smoking, two of humanity's biggest
killers.
But the drug's
benefits may go beyond just smoking and obesity. It may also have impact
on treatment of addiction. Animal studies have shown that Rimonabant can
block the effects of marijuana and fight relapses in alcohol abuse and
cocaine abuse. Rimonabant's versatility is said to be due to its effects
on the brain's reward system, circuitry that tells you to keep on doing
something. It appears to help break the connection between an activity
like smoking and the rewarding feeling it causes in the brain.
The body has it own marijuana
like substances called endocannabinoids, and they activate certain brain
cells that in turn can lead to stimulation of the brain's reward system.
Rimonabant blocks the effects of
natural endocannabinoids by keeping them from latching onto the brain
cells they normally stimulate. |
