A deadly poison extracted from puffer fish may help to relieve pain in cancer patients and also help to reduce heroin withdrawal symptoms. Puffer fish also known as fugu is a culinary dish in Japan. The skin and internal organs of this fish contain a poison known as Tetrodotoxin. This poison is 10,000 times more deadly than cyanide. Each year about 50 people die in Japan after eating improperly cooked fugu. Scientists have transformed this poison to a potent painkiller. This product named Tectin is said to be 3000 times more potent than morphine. This drug is said to give longer lasting relief from pain in cancer patients without the side effects of other common strong painkillers. Researchers are planning large studies and hope to seek FDA approval for the drug in near future. |
