CT Scans Check Heart Disease

Common hospital CT scanners can be used to take pictures of the heart, offering doctors another tool to detect heart disease in its early stages.
Electron beam CT scanners are specialized machines that take pictures of internal organs. Researchers at Wale Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., say by rigging a scanner with an electrocardiogram machine, they can identify calcium deposits in the arteries that could signal heart disease or a potential heart attack.
Researchers studied the effects of using the CT scanner with the EKG machine. The CT scanner shot a continuous stream of pictures, taking 400 images in 35 seconds, creating an X-ray movie of the heart's function.
Doctors say they believe this kind of screening may help more people detect problems early enough to prevent future complications.

The study was presented at the American Heart Association's meeting in Orlando.
