July 06, 2002 In vitro fertilization by brother's sperms A women is to have brother's IVF child. This is to take place at a London Infertility clinic. The official approval has been given. It is a first case in Europe which has created lot of controversy. The women who is menopausal would use a donor egg. Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) - Britain's regulatory body for IVF treatment has given permission for this procedure. It is to be performed at the Bridge Centre, one of Britain's largest clinics. This treatment is not legal anywhere in Europe except Britain. Britain is the only country in Europe which permits donation of human embryos. She was referred to London through a clinic in France. Infertility treatment of post menopausal women is not allowed in France. The brother's sperm will be washed and prepared, and used to fertilize an egg which has come from a completely different anonymous donor. As she has reached the menopause, she will require a donor egg from a younger woman to become pregnant. Samples of her brother's sperm have been frozen and a quarantine period - a safeguard against HIV - expires in a few months. The London clinic will then use the brother's sperm to fertilize the donor egg and the resulting embryo will be inserted into his sister.
